EXECUTIVE
SUMMARY
In
1992, the Hearst Castle Preservation Foundation was created with
a mission to preserve
and restore Hearst Castle and to education the public about its
architectural, historical and artistic significance.
Hearst CastleŽ, a National Historic Monument, has captivated millions
of visitors from all over the world since it was opened to the
public in 1958.
Unfortunately, no endowment
or foundation support accompanied the gift of the Castle to the
State of California in 1957. There are no capital resources available
outside of State funding to preserve, restore, enhance and promote
the Castle's priceless art, architecture and interpretive educational
programs. Escalating Castle restoration costs have created a vital
need for outside funding resources.
The stewardship of Californias priceless cultural
and historical resources is the responsibility of all of its citizens.
The Hearst Castle Preservation Foundation serves as a vehicle
for the public and private sectors as well as individual citizens
to participate in the preservation of this timeless treasure.
Hearst Castle not only represents
the culmination of one mans dream; it also represents the
infinite possibilities attendant to the human spirit.
